Chronic Illness & Mental Health

There is a connection between the mind and, but I'm not here to tell you it's all in your head, gas light you, or invalidate your experience. Chronic Illness therapists are here to do the opposite and providing a safe space for those frustrations of living with chronic illness, living in a body that you may not have the best of relationships with, not having friends or family that understand, trying to feel better while living with medical trauma, and more.

You might wonder, why the zebra? The story goes...in medical school, future doctors are taught that when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras. The horses are the most common diagnosis for the symptoms while the zebras are the exotic rare diagnosis and diseases. You might relate to this. Those that relate have found that getting to the medical answers is a journey, often met with gas lighting and discouragement.

I am here to tell you that there are therapists that absolutely understand this, they "Get it!"

This page is for those of you that are in need of that kind of support, understanding, and validation. A therapist and/or a group that Gets It!

Whether you are a complex and dynamic patient living with multiple health conditions or living with a singular chronic illness that impacts your everyday life, it is completely normal to experience feelings of grief, anxiety, depression, and uncertainty.

Finding a therapist who has lived experience with chronic illness and truly “gets it,” can be a healing experience. Too often, people living with chronic illness experience medical gaslighting or are told that their symptoms are “all in their head.” These experiences can leave you feeling unheard, dismissed, and uncertain about your own experience.

A therapist who specializes in working with chronic illness can provide a safe, validating space to process these feelings and experiences. Therapy can offer an opportunity to be heard and understood while exploring the emotional impact of illness, without having to justify or minimize what you are going through.

Living with a Chronic Illness can be incredibly isolating. Finding others that have similar experiences can be not only validating but a community for support and understanding that tackes the unique challenges that are experience by those with chronic illness. For example, the now established therapy group at !st Priority have all connected outside of group, offer support when each other go through shifts in health, and hold a safe space for each other when meeting in group to grow, learn, and process together.

Hi! I'm Laura Haynes LPCC, MA, MPA, I specialize in Chronic Illness as a therapist. I may not have been in your exact shoes but I recognize them. I also live with a chronic illness and that means I have a limited ability to support everyone that needs it, so I have had the opportunity to create this and work towards connecting with therapists that do have the ability and space. You are welcome to scroll to the end and find a great match.

But, I encourage you to also reach out to me (Laura.1stpriorityinstitute@gmail.com) so I can keep you up to date on future opportunities for connection in groups, resources, and when I update this page.

Why therapy?

Finding a Therapist that Gets it

We have three therapists at 1st Priority that specialize in Chronic Illness (Laura Haynes, Kerry Goude, and Amelie Rey), they are certainly worth taking a look at! If they do not fit your needs please look at all the many other therapists in Colorado that could be a good fit.

Remember to: check insurances and check in with the therapist if they offer in person or telehealth. Those that list groups likely start groups at different times of the year and while they might be full, it does not hurt to request being added to their wait list. Everyone listed only wants for you to find the care you need and deserve.

Added layer of support:  a Therapy Group

I started my counseling journey with the intention of running a Chronic Illness Therapy Group. I did not realize the power of a group.

My starting this page is really so I can spread the word that there are not only therapists that specifically work with chronic illness/pain but also have groups dedicated to this.

The group I started in 2023 is now estabolished, they are friends, they have found connection and community with each other and are continuing on in the challenging work of growing together in this therapy group that is tackling very tough realities of living with chronic illnesses.

I encourage you to reach out to each therapist offering groups to find a good fit. I am unable to keep up with start dates and whether groups are filled or not, so hopefully how the information is set up below is accessible for you. Please, if you have questions, reach out to me at: Laura.1stpriorityinstitute@gmail.com
